It's surprisingly not too swelter-y in New York City at the moment, given that it's August. I'll take it, though. This blog's co-authors are about to decamp to triple-digit-temperature Las Vegas for TCONA, though, so I'm sure we'll be in need of some refreshment. (Recommend any places? Drop a comment or a Tweet our way.)
Here's some of what's caught my eye around the Interwebs of late:
- Camper English lets us know that Noilly Prat is reintroducing its former "French Dry Vermouth" formula, the one they sold in the US for thirty years. It'll now be sold as "Noilly Prat Extra Dry", alongside the current "Noilly Prat Original Dry" version (the one that's sold all over the world). And their Ambre is coming to major US markets!
- And Dolin is launching a génépy (aka génépi -- a juniper liqueur) in the US. Can't wait to try theirs. I lugged a bottle of a small producer's génépi back from the French Alps once and greatly enjoyed it.
- TIL that there was such a thing as a "mermaid bar." Katherine Dorsett Bennett of CNN.com runs down her top five:
- Friend of the blog, tiki bar proprietor, syrup maven, and all-around good guy Blair Reynolds has opened up a new retail storefront site;
- the Prohibition Kit is unbelievably cool. I want a stealth still!
- the New York Times tastes blanco tequilas, and comes up with some interesting results;
- also in the Times, Christopher Buckley contemplates booze as muse;
- Wow, there sure are a lot of cocktail weeks around the world;
- I really wanna visit The Rosebery. Craft cocktails on a Routemaster double-decker bus!
- One of our colorful mayoral candidates -- or at least his pseudonym -- has inspired not one, but two "Carlos Danger" cocktails;
- What does your favorite fictional character drink? Here's a chart;
- Sku does us all an enormous favor and lays out exactly who produces what whiskey, in the updated Complete List of American Whiskey Distilleries & Brands;
- Zing! Five out of five stars for Red Velvet Cake vodka! (And apparently everything else reviewed by TheCelebrityCafe.com!)
- You can distill from anything these days -- including coffee;
- The Fifty Best tells us about their favorite bitters;
- On bartending at the South Pole;
- a progressive-politics salon coupled with a craft cocktail bar;
- Departures says the speakeasy concept is dead, in their rundown of ten New York cocktail bars. (Jim Meehan begs to differ, pointing out that hospitality can take many different forms, and concluding that "the community needs to rally around diversity of concepts and styles and support each other." Hear hear.)
- Rosie Schaap says that on the other hand, preppy drinks never go out of style;
- Cocktails in Moscow, in 1941, as pictured by Margaret Bourke-White;
- If you empty this liquor cabinet, you may not be able to walk any more -- but it will;
- Karswell has scanned the Southern Comfort Spirit of '76 Bar Guide;
- Beachbum Berry has a really cool house;
- Best WSJ correction ever; and
- the Bloody Mary Garnish Arms Race has gotta stop.
